This morning, I had a completely different plan for my 10th grade students who are are currently reading The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison.  Soon after arriving at school, I discovered that our school wifi network was down and I would be unable to proceed with my plan for them this morning.  However, this setback turned into an opportunity to talk deeply about some of the characters from the book.

I shared with them the chart  below and we used as an example Claudia and we talked about some of the nuances of her actions, thoughts and feelings in the book.

Then students were asked to choose a character they were most interested in exploring and complete a similar chart and present their work to the class.

This activity gave my students an opportunity to discuss with each other the ideas, moments and questions they were currently grappling with in the book.  Next time, when I do a similar activity, I would be more mindful in choosing the groups as there were some students who did not really contribute and let others just carry the task out for them.  You can find the word document for character exploration as well as pictures of their character charts below.  Feel free to leave a comment on how you get your students to think deeply about characters.  Thanks for reading!
